Mama Knows Best
King Solomon in the Bible is known as the wisest man who ever lived. God granted him tremendous wisdom, but Solomon also acquired much of this wisdom from his own experiences. He didn’t just receive knowledge and theories from God, but he wisely navigated the difficult choices he faced every day with God’s help. Solomon clearly identified God as the source of wisdom (1:7), but quickly looks to his parents as an essential channel through which God powerfully works (1:8). I thank God that I have been blessed with godly, loving parents who have walked before Him with integrity and honesty. However, our parents don’t have to be perfect to learn from them. Solomon’s parents, David and Bathsheba, committed adultery and his dad murdered a man to eventually claim Bathsheba as his wife.
Even with this family history, Solomon is able to assert that parents “will be a garland of grace on your head and a gold chain around your neck” (1:9). Today, we might wear a trendy hat and beautiful jewelry to maintain an attractive appearance. In the same way, Solomon stresses that our daily Christian walk should be adorned with our parents’ instruction and wisdom. Today’s verse reminds me to have a greater appreciation for my parents and their influence in my life. Those who have been blessed with great parents can renew their thankfulness towards them. Others who have parents like David and Bathsheba can learn to forgive their mistakes and focus on the positive impact they have made in their life. Finally, those who have absent or hurtful parents can look to the father and mother figures that God has put in your life to play that role in their place. While no parent is perfect, we have a Heavenly Father who lavishly loves us and guides us each day.
