What’s fattening you?

I recently started a new job and I work with a lively bunch of women, most of whom are mothers and wives. With the holidays quickly approaching, conversation naturally transitions to gift giving and vacations. From overpriced American Girl dolls to IPads for toddlers, it hit home with how enthralled we are with buying/giving the best gifts, including gifting ourselves. Unfortunately this attitude doesn’t stop with the holidays; we’ve become a society obsessed with having the newest and shiniest things, even if it means stealing, deceiving, or going bankrupt. James 5:5 speaks about how we fatten our hearts with the pursuit of earthly pleasures and luxuries. I look at my own bank account and see money spent on things I can’t recall or how my 8 yr. old. expects a new video game every month. I have recently began to ask the question, “What is this all for?” Luke 16:15 reads…And He said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.” In some circles this is known as keeping up with the Jones’ and most of us have been guilty of this at one time or another. Instead of adorning ourselves, our homes, and our children to look “good” for others, I challenge us to become a body of Christ that is concerned with being adorned with our spiritual gifts, adorned with the light of Christ so that we may carry out our Father’s business. I have already begun preparations to par down my own lifestyle in pursuit of being more in line with God’s plan for me. I believe that in all seasons God wants us to be fattened with His word, fattened with a spirit of servitude, and fattened with an outpouring of His love. So, bedsides turkey, stuffing, and mac-n-cheese, what will you be fattened with this holiday season?
