You Can’t Always Get What You Want

Hurry up and buy a ticket. Saturday’s Powerball jackpot is $148 million. Not bad. Have you ever thought about what you would do if you won the lottery? I’d be willing to bet most of us Christians would put a little away for ourselves and then give the rest away to ministries, missions, and charities. Right. That sounds good on paper. We might even convince ourselves that we really would give the money away. But did you know that statistically, the lifestyle activities of a born-again Christian are no different than those of a non believer? That means that we lie, steal office supplies, cheat on our spouse, ignore our children, and watch porn just as much as someone who doesn’t follow Christ. The same goes for our money. We give very little to the church. So God knows our heart. He knows how selfish we can be. He knows that sometimes, not giving us something is the best answer. Not really much of a prosperity gospel is it? In Christian world, we hear a lot of preachers saying if we will just give to the church, God will bless us with all sorts of material things- Cars, houses, nice clothes, etc. There certainly isn’t anything wrong with any of these things. But, sometimes, could these things be “our pleasures”? Do I really need another pair of running shoes? My truck is running just fine. But if I begin to look at new ones, I can really come down with a case of the wants very quickly. The $80 that I spend on running shoes could take care of a widow in Kenya for 2 months. God’s Word is always good for a little perspective.
