Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda…

We all know that we cannot take back what we have said or done, yet sometimes we wish we could. Instead of dwelling on what could have or should have or would have been said or done, we are called to focus on and embrace God’s perfect law, that which gives us freedom. Once we do that we will start to “speak and act as those who are going to be judged by it.” Not only is there a blessing behind it, but the desire to act in accordance with God’s perfect law will and must grow. As Jesus tells us in John 13:17 “you know these things, now do them.” What are these things then? One good place to start would be by doing as Jesus did, who washed the feet of his disciples. Practicing the washing of feet to me means loving, ALL THE TIME, being merciful, compassionate and humble towards everyone. Yes, it’s hard. Yes, at times it’s inconvenient and Yes, I might not feel like it, but how can I let those thoughts get in the way of what Jesus wants me to do after He died for me and showed me mercy that I do not deserve. How can I sing “I’m so glad, you died for me, I’m so glad you shed your blood just for me” and then think I am good. Martin Luther said “ We owe reverence to everybody, even though we are equally free. Because freedom does not refer to ill-doings but solely to good deeds”. Christ set us free to love Him and to love others. We are especially free because true love makes you free. We are free to love and free to forgive. People don’t come into our lives at random, God puts them there for a reason. So if we look down on them or think ill of them we will most certainly miss the purpose of them being there.
