Ah, perfection!

Have you ever had a perfect day? Waking up on time, and getting in a good workout. Making all the lights and having no traffic on the way to work. Every project is turned in on time. Your inbox is empty by the end of the day. A friend treats you to lunch. The boss recognizes your talents and contributions. You make it home in time to spend quality time with your children who do their homework without complaining. The last part of the day is spent with your spouse having a great conversation. Perfection. We generally define it as when everything goes our way. We experience no distractions or bumps in the road. It’s something we strive for everyday in many areas and facets of our life. We know full well that it’s probably unattainable, but it’s nice to dream. Who knew that it all begins with the tongue? If we can control that, we can do the same in so many other areas. “Take that back!” Did you ever say that as a child? You’ve probably heard your own children say it a time or two. But in reality we can’t take it back. It’s like trying to unring a bell. It can’t be done. Our words have tremendous power. They can build up or tear down. They can encourage or deceive. James knew how potent mere words can be. He also knew how they can change the direction of our life. If there was ever a place to strive for perfection, it should be in what we say.
