Treasures of this world are nothing next to the one’s in Heaven
Partiality = Love = worship = idolatry? What motivates us to partiality, whether consciously or not? Is it status, greed, pride, is showing kindness (‘loving’) to this person going to gain me anything? So then my question is this a form of idolatry??? Idolatry – excessive or blind adoration (love), devotion, but not of the person, of their things. So now we do not TRULY love the rich man or the poor man and we are committing idolatry and breaking the commandment to love the Lord and your neighbor? I think that this scripture is both literal and symbolic; I think the literal version has been covered very well. I want to take a look at the symbolic side of this. The bible says that all scripture points to Christ…
You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, – John 5:39
So maybe the rich man is a representation of the wordly things we strive for …money, cars, jewels, status and etc… and the poor man (humble) is a representation of Christ, the seemingly less attractive
“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it .Matthew 7:13 -14
My point being that instead of seeking Jesus we are choosing to strive for the fading (seemingly more attractive) riches of this world. The satisfaction we get in this world is fleeting; instead we should focus our on eternal things. I speak from experience I know I have been guilty of this plenty of times, and still am at times.
