Be your part! No more! No less!

What if all you were, was a big toe? Wow, that would stink! (No pun intended) Always getting walked on, stomped on, spilled on, not much to look at, often stuck away in dark places, and rarely caressed and loved on. If that was the only consideration our big toe got it would seem useless to us.

Years ago I coached a young man who had lost his big toe in a fight with a lawnmower. He was a great basketball player who could sink a 3 from 45 feet, but he couldn’t jump, run well, and didn’t have great balance. All of those issues, (he said) stemmed from the missing big toe. He would have been so much more effective and satisfied had he had all of his parts.

In my view, the entire 1st letter to the church of Corinth is devoted to our understanding of unity in Christ. Christ wants us to live in a position of victory, not cowering in defeat. 1 Cor. 12:12-30 focuses on doing our part so the body operates from a position of strength. If we were all one part, where would the body be?

Why do we feel like we have a right to choose what part of the body of Christ we are? Why do we virtually disregard those parts we view as unimportant? God’s call to us is unity in Christ, all pulling together to bring glory to Him. God see’s all of us parts as important. If all God has for me right now is big toe functions, I’m ready! I want to be the best part I can be, and make the other parts better. Want to have the best family, community group, and church? Be your part! No more! No Less!
