Don’t Forget Your Sword
Before the days of ESPN and satellite sports packages, NFL Films was the king of football highlights. They had a segment called Football Follies with all sorts of mistakes, mishaps, and miscues. As a kid, I loved watching the really old highlights from the 40’s and 50’s. One thing that always stood out to me was the helmets. They consisted of a couple layers of leather, no face mask. Could you imagine Aaron Rodgers dropping back to pass wearing one of those? I mean, it is a helmet. But why wouldn’t you use the best helmet available? If you have something right at your fingertips that can protect you, wouldn’t you be a fool not to use it? I think one of Satan’s most effective weapons against us is our complacency. We tell ourselves we don’t need the full armor of God today. I’ll be okay without it. But we need that protection. AND, we really need that one offensive weapon He has given us. The sword of the Spirit; His Word. As a whole it is an amazing weapon. But when you break it down into chapters and verses, it becomes thousands of weapons. That verse will be just the right type of sword you need at that particular time. This is where that complacency can trip us up again. If I don’t know the Word, it can’t help me. Spending time reading and learning the Bible is vital to my growth. It’s not so I can let everyone know how many verse I’ve memorized. It’s so I can call on that part of God’s armor daily when the time comes
