What a Girl Wants
First, let me talk to the husbands. The previous verses brings you guys into this whole situation. Earlier Paul is telling you to love your wives like Christ loves the Church. “Well, what does that look like?” some of you are saying. “Nourish and cherish” is what the NASB says. Just like you GIVE your body what it needs to be healthy and strong, find out what your wife needs so that she is emotionally, socially, and spiritually healthy and strong. Also, GIVING is selfless. All successful relationships require putting others needs ahead of our own. Of course this applies to both parties.
Cherish is not a word we use in our everyday conversations. One of the synonyms that Merriam-Webster gives is “adore.” Do you adore your wife? Webster also gives a definition of “cultivating with care.” No matter how independent and strong we women present ourselves, God made us to be handled with loving care. Cultivating is a gardening term. It is a process that takes time and energy.
All of us should be encouraged with the realization that Christ nourishes and lovingly cultivates our lives through the work of the Holy Spirit. He gives us what we need for growth (not necessarily what we want). He is constantly pouring into us and cultivating us into his likeness.
