Look busy, the boss is coming

When you are driving and notice a police car behind you, or maybe on the side of the road, what is the first thing you do? I would be willing to bet a very large percentage of people immediately slow down. Even if you aren’t speeding, your first instinct is to tap the brakes, right? All of the sudden the eyes of a higher authority are watching. And we feel the need to toe the line. It really seems to make a difference in how we act when we know someone is watching. In Ephesians 6:6, Paul is addressing slaves specifically in regards to work and relating to their masters. But these first few verses of the chapter and really even part of Chapter 5 have a common thread. That is the rules of conduct; how we should behave in various relationships- husband and wives, parents and children, and finally slaves and masters.

As Christ followers, shouldn’t our behavior exemplify that relationship? And certainly not because someone happens to be watching us at the moment; but because we are “doing the will of God from our heart.” If we constantly operate from a Kingdom perspective, all of our relationships would improve. Am I treating my spouse properly? How am I relating to my children? Am I putting my total effort into my job while I’m on the clock? If I am, then I’m doing the will of God. Bill Hybels wrote a book years ago titled “Who You Are When No One’s Looking”. It would be great to be able to respond to that title by saying “I’m the same.”
