Gotta Serve Somebody

One of my dear friends from Cumberland is a very smart, successful businessman. Although he is retired, he is still actively serving others in many ways. At one point, he noticed that CCC had a facilities need. So, rather than complain about it, he tackled it. He started showing up on a weekly basis to clean the bathrooms. Sometimes he recruited a helper from his community group, but often he did it alone, expecting no thanks.

I immediately thought of my friend when I read this verse. He didn’t do it to gain approval, or even for any monetary gain. He wanted to serve his God by serving the church. I have another friend who always says, “I don’t go to work, I go to worship.” He is a true picture of someone living out this verse.

It’s easier for some to embrace this concept than others. I am incredibly blessed – I actually get to do things I’m passionate about (and, I think, hard-wired and gifted to do). I thank God every day that I get to do it for a living. But I have so many friends who have had to take jobs that make them miserable, just for the paycheck. They aren’t able to use their gifts in their jobs, and they have to try to maintain a positive attitude in spite of incredibly negative work environments.

In addition to our jobs, I think this verse translates to our relationships as well. My first ministry is to my husband and children. How do I serve them? Do I do it with joy, as unto the Lord? Or do I bemoan my circumstances on those tougher days, and entertain self-pity? Do I put others first and serve them as if I am serving Him, or do I become offended if others don’t meet my needs, desires, expectations?

2 Corinithians 4:1 says, “Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart.” ? If we remember the way Jesus served us, how should that change our perspective of serving others? I think it can help us to “not lose heart.” Whether it’s your job, your school, your family, or friendships, this verse is a healthy reminder of whom you are truly serving.
