Stepping on Fortune Cookies
Remember that classic scene from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom where Indiana and Short Round (that is the name of the Asian kid who is also one of the Goonies) are walking through a dark tunnel. Short Round exclaims that he feels like he’s stepping on fortune cookies. Eventually Indiana lights a match to find out exactly what they are stepping on. Here’s a clip of that scene:
I think we often walk around in the dark. It can be so much easier to not see the junk and mess that we may have in our lives. Often you will see people on game shows when they have to eat or do something that may seem gross or creepy, and they will close their eyes in order to get through to the end. We definitely try to avoid exposure and seeing just how bad things might be. We are worried that we may light a match, and there are bugs and creatures crawling all over us.
But, with God, we really need to learn not to fear exposure. His perfect love should drive out that fear. In God, we are declared “children of light.” Christ said as part of His mission that he has “come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness” (John 12:46).
So what does exposure look like? I think its letting in the light, which includes spending time in His Word, prayer, fellowship with believers… basically surrounding yourself with the things of God. It is in these moments that sin, darkness, transgressions come to light. We experience conviction when we surround ourselves with the things of God, but the light leads us to repentance, so that we can represent the light that lives in us.
On a similar note, always loved this MLK quote: Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
