Mouth like a Sailor

Obscenity, foolish talk, and coarse joking…well, I’ve never had any issues with that and I’m sure that no one reading this ever has either. Wasn’t that easy? Oh, but if it were only that simple. Of course, if nothing else, I’m sure we would all admit to at least a little foolish talk in our lifetime.

Honestly, most of us probably don’t have the mouth of a sailor, but let’s combine our key verse with the “Matthew 5 Standard.” In Matthew, Jesus sets a higher standard in regards to murder and adultery. He says that if we merely have thoughts of hate and lust in our hearts and minds, it is the same as committing murder or adultery.

Now, let’s get to it. Have you ever “thought” that word in your head after you slam the hammer down on your waiting thumb? What about when that crazy driver in the sports car nearly rams you into the guardrail? Hmmm, according to the Matthew 5 principle and God’s standard, most of us are just as guilty as the Pirates of the Caribbean.

However, I don’t want to leave you with all that guilt and shame. Don’t forget the good news from verse 2 of this chapter: Christ gave himself up for us to save us from our sinful selves and bring freedom.

I remember a silly children’s show from when I was a kid that compared our lives as Christians to computers. The song said, “Input – output, what goes in, must come out.” Are there some things that you are putting into your heart and mind through your ears and eyes that are corrupting your hard drive? Follow the advice of verse 18 and let the Holy Spirit fill you and clean out the old junk. Oh yeah, and don’t forget to upload “whatsoever things are true, noble, and of good report.”
