Bad Company Corrupts Good Morals

Partner, associate, participate three words that give you an idea of how not to live our lives in Christ. All these words are given the preface of “ DO NOT”. This is quite the contrast from the beginning of the chapter where we are told “TO BE”.

We are to be imitators of Jesus and not to partner, associate or participate with sexual immorality, impurity, greedy, obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking.

This is confusing because in the Gospels it says about Jesus,” When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” Jesus was hanging out with the very type of people Paul tells us to stay clear of…….or does he? So who is right?

BOTH!

We are to spend time with all types of people with all types of needs and far from God. We are the light of the world. However we are not to partner, associate or participate. These words tell us not to make them your closest friends or confidants. We are to love all and spend time with all kinds of people that they may see the love of Jesus. However we are warned here not to make such people our closest friends or associates. Why? Paul said “Bad company corrupts good morals.”
