And the next Food Network Star is…

Within the last few years my husband has become an avid sports fan. I blame his new found addiction on The South and Cable TV. Thanks Comcast. However, every time I threaten to get rid of cable, because all he wants to do is watch sports, he strikes back by saying, “Ok…I guess that means no more HGTV and no more Food Network.” Like kryptonite to Superman, in this case woman, I buckle and have no power to even put up a fight. He got me.

Now that you know I’m an HGTV and Food Network addict, it should be no surprise that while I was in the kitchen preparing dinner the other night, I had one of my favorite channels, Food Network, humming in the background. I knew exactly what I was going to cook. I had everything I needed, and the recipe was memorized in my head. All of a sudden, without evening knowing, the sounds of Food Network caught my attention and took me away from cooking. Out of nowhere my mind began to wander. I started to get new ideas on how I could make my meal better. I googled, I foodnetwork.comed, and long and behold, I was so far away from the meal I thought I was preparing to something completely new. I may have been using the same ingredients I started with, but I was convinced that I needed to add more to make this meal slammin’ and better than it had ever been.

Man, was I deceived. This meal was awful and nothing like the original. I had made too many variations to my dish because of what I read on websites and what I saw on TV. These “cunning” and “crafty” teachings took me far away from the recipe that I knew to be true. In addition to this, I am a newer cook and therefore became even more susceptible to being tossed back and forth.

Now take my cooking story and apply it to new believers. They are as new to faith as I am to cooking, and to be honest, they often have a short attention span, which is characteristic of new believers. They are easy targets and can easily be deceived. It’s amazing the things we are deceived by: false teaching, cults, and not only by the false teachers and the cultists, but even by other new Christians. At times, even those who have been in church for some time can have some crazy, off-the-wall ideas that can misguide others.

One of the duties of all true teachers of the Word is to strive to answer the questions that new believers have and to make them strong in their new found faith. It’s vital for us to be disciples making disciples and ground those around us in the truth of God. As for me, well, I guess I should just stick with my momma’s recipes.
