A picture of this is the process in Roman construction whereby the slaves would turn huge rocks around and around until they fit each other perfectly. This process formed columns that appeared to be one piece, but were actually many pieces resting on each other.
This to me speaks of how God is with us as humans. We are the rocks that He just keeps turning until we will one day all fit together as a perfect image of Him. Now our simple minds tend to think, “There are only so many sides to us so why is it taking so long for this process to happen”. To me this is the beauty of God. He could just make this happen in the blink of an eye but He chooses not to. I think He does this so we will learn. And as we learn, we will be an example to the world.
Another element to this building, the church, is that Jesus is the called the cornerstone or foundation in Psalms 118:22, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” The one stone we choose to neglect is the very stone that holds us all together. The reality of this is that you can build a building and try to place the cornerstone last, but it will not fit. The only way to insure that is to build off the cornerstone. In other words, put Jesus first in your life and all else will fit. Let him be what holds you together. Then and only then will you be a holy temple in the Lord.
I also can’t help but think of this corporately for our church. Coming out of this year of prayer has really made our staff, elders and body do an about face. I have never heard so many people having casual conversations about God. This says a lot about the focus at our church. It seems a lot more folks are letting Jesus be their cornerstone.

He is the Rock of Ages. His word stands true yesterday today and forever. May Christ be CCC’s cornerstone now and forever. Thank you for the word picture of the pillars and the church. I pray CCC will be a strong tower in Smyrna and the World.
Brother Kevin:
Your Roman construction analogy is masterful in the way it helps us to understand how God puts us together in Christ.
Thanks for your love, leadership, and devotion to your family and CCC.
Love you, bro.
Kevin, if I had not known otherwise, I would have thought you were remembering those fabulous structures in Greece, but it was April that was there!
“The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone” has been a special verse to me. During my architectural history classes(20 yrs ago), I began to look at the “cornerstone” differently. The name of the center stone in a Roman arch referred to as the keystone. I wondered if correct translation from Hebrew to English might have been “The stone the builders rejected has become the KEYSTONE.” The importance of the keystone is that the weight of the entire structure rests on it.
I see other verses that refer to the cornerstone as being the foundation upon which to build and I see that would need to be the first consideration. On the other hand, the keystone is the completion, the part be built toward, with each stone being hewn precisely for that stone – the most important stone.
Thanks for insightful words and encouragement. Good to be part of your “family.”
