The God with more gifts than Home Depot

Have you ever started into a home improvement project only to realize that you’re missing some of the tools you need to get the job done? A couple of years ago, I adopted a friend’s habit of measuring the effort of a home improvement project by counting the expected or actual number of trips to Home Depot required to finish the job.

Our deck refinishing project at home is at 3 trips and counting. It’s a lot of effort, but it’s better than trying to stock Home Depot’s entire inventory at home. Home Depot is a really big place. None of us have the time, money, or space, to keep track of all of the tools that we might need to do many projects around our home.

When it comes to doing God’s work as a community, as a church, He tells us in Ephesians 1 that He has given the spiritual equivalent of every tool at Home Depot and more, right at our fingertips! He “has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ”. How big is that? EVERY spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. Every spiritual gift available in heaven is available to us today. God has withheld nothing from us. There are no new spiritual gifts that are reserved only for heaven.

He doesn’t say that each of us has every gift. Later in Ephesians 4:11, Paul elaborates, “And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers”. Individually, through Christ, we are gifted to serve God in unique ways. Together, we are gifted to serve God in every possible way.

Take this opportunity to praise God for equipping God for equipping us, His church, to do anything and everything He calls us to as a community. Thank Him in prayer for the gifts He has given you to serve Him, and for the complementary gifts He has given people around you so that we can and must fully serve Him by serving together.
