God Is Grace and God is Good

Few roles in life teach more about life as that of parent. The success of our children take us to unparalled heights of joy and pride, while at the same time, our children’s mistakes bring anguish and heartbreak. We are up and down directly proportional to the ups and downs of our children. As long as are alive, we never feel free of the responsibility and protectiveness that come from being a parent.

Our Heavenly Father knew how far we would fall from his desired plan for us. Because of this for-knowledge, God made provision for our eternal security and salvation through His Son Jesus Christ’s death on the cross and His Resurrection.

As Paul wrote to the Ephesians, we get three huge gifts from Christ: the redemption from His shed blood, the forgiveness of sins, and God’s grace lavished upon us. The word lavish in the Greek is “polytelis,” which means “magnificent.” God’s grace for us is magnificent. He has made provisions for our every need. Even His Son’s brutal death was not too high a price to pay.

Since God has lavished us with such grace, why do we struggle so much with lack of confidence and self-esteem? It is because we know we’re unlovable by ourselves, and have a hard time accepting God’s unconditional love for us. The way to fight our defeatist attitudes and opinions of ourselves is to pursue the “all wisdom and understanding” that Paul wrote about in verse eight. Just as our kids need to learn how to become mature, responsible adults, adult Sons and Daughters of God have to learn how to become mature, responsible Christians. We do this from 1) reading His Word, 2) communicating with God through prayer, and 3) exercising faith through our belief in Jesus.

My biggest pipe dream may be that I could be as great a parent to Courtney as God is to me.
