As if we needed this reminder…!
At first reading, we may feel a bit guilty as we come to this verse. “Wait a minute, I often still gratify the cravings of my flesh and follow its desires and thoughts” we think. Why is Paul referring to the past as though we’re now perfect!
I think Paul would say to us what he said in Philippians 3:12: “I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me.”
It’s about the road we’re on. The past is obvious, and if we stayed on that path our future would be the “wrath” that Paul talks about. The future is perfection, when we are with Christ in heaven. The middle of the journey, where we are now, is all about forgiveness. This is the encouraging thought I think Paul had in mind with this verse.

The future is perfection, the journey is now and is all about forgiveness. This is a good thought for me to soak on all day today. Thanks Vince!

Vince,
Thanks for sharing, I pretty sure I would not have been able to pull that from Eph 2:3. I think that I would have stayed stuck with the “Wait a minute” thought and not moved much beyond.
What freedom to live in his forgiveness and mercy. That he covers us until perfection.
Lord Jesus, please help us to strive to please you until that day. Amen.
Later,
Phillip
