The Mathare Slum
Today, the team will spend the afternoon in the Mathare Slum. Mathare is referred to as the oldest and worst slum in Africa. It is a place for criminals, drug addicts, the unemployed and prostitutes. The crime rate is very high. According to a website, there are approximately 800,000 people living in this area which is 1.2 miles by .2 miles.
As I prepared for the trip, I have felt many emotions about going to Mathare. For those who know me well, I am a very aware of my surroundings and safety conscience. So, going into this situation caused me some concern. I felt fear, anxiety, and to be honest, maybe uncertain of what emotions I might feel from what I would experience.
In one of our meetings, someone said that God already knew who would be on this trip and the plans for us. So, I thought about this verse, and realized that God already knows the plans for today. He has a plan of the team and exactly how we need to be used. I pray that I will trust Him. I pray I will allow Him to have my fears, the anxiety, and concerns as I face situations that I feel anxious about today. Knowing that He loves me and wants me to trust Him will all of my heart and in every situation.

I can tell you from experience that you will feel every possible emotion while walking into and out of Mathare. However, your time ‘inside’ you will be overwhelmed with this contagious joy from the people and the ‘howareyou’ said over and over by the children warm your heart like a sweet melody. God already has our plans set and he knew exactly what he was doing when he took me there 5 short months ago…He forever changed me!
