Wise Old Owl

I like the TV show, MythBusters, because it challenges what I think is true.  We live in a world where there are so many myths, misconceptions and lies. It’s often hard to know what to believe. I thought that as I grew older I was supposed to get wiser.  If so, why do I keep on doing some of the stupidest things?  Is the idea that wisdom comes with age true, or simply a myth?

I’m not quite sure what a wise person should look like.  Surely not an owl.  But old people grumbling and complaining, stumbling along with shuffling feet moaning and groaning isn’t a picture of wisdom.  And what about the belief that “experience” produces wisdom.  Old folks have a lot of experience.  They get respect for it, sometimes.  But experience hasn’t made me wise.

The Bible has 459 verses with either “wise” or “wisdom” in them.  So there must be a reason for it.  An interesting clue is found in three of the verses.   ”Listen to my instruction and be wise…” Prov. 8:33.    ”For I will give you words andwisdom …” Luke 21:15 .   ”What man is wise enough to understand this? Who has been instructed by the LORDand can explain it?” Jer.9:12.

Sounds like wisdom comes through prayer and listening to God, doesn’t it?  Saturating ourselves with the Word of God and allowing God to fill us with His wisdom is the way to live.  Then the experience we gain will have eternal meaning.
