Thanks = Recognition = Happiness

I think most people would agree that it’s often hard to know what is and isn’t a “God thing.” But rather than overanalyze it, I prefer to thank God for all the good things. It could be something small, like thanking God for helping me remember to write this entry after I had totally forgotten and laid down in bed to go to sleep. (I thank God for helping me remember a lot of things.) Or just thanking God for keeping me focused during the work day. In my case, these are not elaborate prayers — instead its just a quick “thanks for the help on that one, God!”

I’ve noticed that the more I thank God for the little things that occur throughout the course of my day, the happier I generally am. Conversely, if I am taking the little things for granted, those are usually the times when I feel I had a bad day. I think this is part of why God wants us to to give thanks in all circumstances — because it helps us see the good in all circumstances. And when we are constantly focused on God’s blessings, being joyful just comes naturally.

So if you find yourself in “glass half empty” mode (or if you just haven’t given many thanks today), give this a shot. What can you thank God for so far today? How about in the last 5 minutes?
