Prayer through the Storms

When I was 29 years old I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, a form of cancer. Luckily I had just dedicated my life to God and there was no turning back. As a new Christian I really didn’t think I knew how to pray so I would read, worship, and just talk to God.

For eight months I went through Chemo therapy. After that, three weeks of radiation and then a Bone Marrow transplant. I had a bad reaction to the radiation and my skin where it was applied was burned severely. The Drs were stunned and gave me a bad prognosis; less than a 20% chance of survival. I was very ill and at times could not even read or pray. But I had a team of warriors here at Cumberland praying for me non stop. It took a long time, but I finally recovered through the Grace of God.

About two years after that nightmare, I started having some bad symptoms and two months after that I could not walk. Once again the side effects of radiation reared its ugly head. I was told that the radiation had hit my spinal cord and burned it. Large doses of steroids was the treatment that was given to me to stop the swelling in my spine. Unfortunately, the steroids elevated my blood sugar levels and I almost slipped into a coma. While being hospitalized for five weeks I was near death again as I had another bad reaction to a combination of medicines. During this time, CCC and my family prayed endlessly.

Philippians 4:6-7 says that through prayer the peace of God transcends all understanding. I will testify that what God says is true. I was so peaceful during my struggles; so much that many could not understand it. Even Christians that saw me and knew the details of what was happening had a hard time understanding how I could be at such peace. I my self did not understand it. What I do know though is that God is great and can pull us through any storm peacefully.
