Exceeding Expectations

People often let us down. Sometimes this happens because we are being selfish and expecting too much, and sometimes this happens because the other person is not as concerned about our well-being as we are. Even those who love us and are genuinely concerned about us can let us down at times. After all, we’re only human. We may mess it all up unintentionally, or we may simply lack the resources to bless others the way we want to.

On the other hand, prayer to God is never a setup for a letdown. Scripture frequently challenges us to bring God our requests and needs (see Malachi 3:10-12 and Matthew 7:7-11). God is not limited or strained by our circumstances. He can do “immeasurably more” than we could even dream of asking. It is simply impossible to ask for more than God can provide. God doesn’t just come through in the clutch… when He steps to the plate, He delivers a home run!

Notice the end of verse 20. God’s power “is at work within us.” God doesn’t just do amazing things… he uses us to do amazing things! Things we couldn’t even imagine we could do! So when we pray, we should understand that God activates his unstoppable power through willing servants, through human vessels that surrender to God’s purposes. So when we pray, expecting God to do jaw-dropping things in our lives, we know that God will truly receive “glory in the church and in Christ Jesus.” What we cannot do ourselves, God is ready to do through us by His mighty power. God wants to use us to answer one another’s prayers.

So remember, other people may not come through for us. But God is always able to exceed our expectations. Most of all, He wants to accomplish amazing things by working through your life so that He can receive eternal glory. Are you trusting Him to do that today?
