Intimacy with God will make His heart, your heart.

I am great at praying the 2nd part of this verse. It became very real to me at a point in my life when I was tired of "waiting patiently on the Lord." The Holy Spirit led me to realize that I needed to align my heart’s desire with God’s desire for my heart. I needed to pray this verse and experience the first part – delighting in the Lord, intimacy with Him, taking joy in Him. With devotion to my relationship with Him, God’s desires would become my desires. They would become second nature, if you will. Created in His image, my heart would mirror His.

I share all that because for the past several months, I have been praying this same prayer that God led me to several years ago. It has application to all the earthly circumstances any of us face, everyday – family relationships, financial decisions, how we choose to spend our time and so many other things. As I have been praying over the past week, I’ve realized that I have been limiting God by only praying this prayer for one aspect of my life – the current one I want an answer to – and only focusing on the 2nd part of the verse. I need to be living out this verse in its totality, daily – not by focusing on my heart’s desires but by delighting in the LORD. There’s a reason David wrote it in this order!

So what does this mean for me? For you? Daily time in His Word, building a prayer closet, delivering a meal, singing a song, being still, sharing the Gospel. These are just a few ways that we can delight in the LORD – to know Him, to love Him, to be more like Him. When we take the time and focus on delighting in Him, taking joy in Him, loving Him – the desires of our heart can’t help but become His.
