If you’re going to get Cholesterol, get the good kind

A couple of years back my mother came to visit me from Africa. She is a lovely lady with quite a sense of humor. We took off to visit 10 or so other American cities, a trip that took 13 days. As we went from one point to the other it became apparently clear that my mother was not comfortable experimenting in the local cuisine. Every time we walked into a restaurant I would order something and she would just order a cheeseburger. As soon as the food came, she would take a bite of her burger and ask whether she could taste my food, needless to say she liked my food every time and I would offer it to her getting stuck with her burgers. Three days into this routine and with my bad cholesterol levels headed to outer space, I had it. I told her that I would order for her something that I think she would like and if for any reason she didn’t like it we could always order a cheeseburger. I would like to say I had an eventless rest of the trip but then there is the story about Airport security in NY, and the Indian cab driver in Chicago. But let’s save those stories for another day.

As we go through a year of prayer, I think God looks at us and really wants us to stop settling for the proverbial cheeseburger. He wants the best and all we have to do is ask. If we live within his boundaries, we will experience the goodness of his grace and mercy. I thank God for my small group that consists of great men and women who remind me not to settle for spiritual cheeseburgers. Especially Michael who repeatedly quotes James 1:17 NIV Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
