What, Me A Priest?

These verses make it clear that all believers in God through Jesus Christ are called to be priests. The word priest is defined in a number of ways, and traditionally is held to be someone who holds a specific and honored position in the church. But since these verses indicate that the entire nation of believers are priests, what is God really talking about? How can all Christ followers think, behave, and live as priests?

I think the answer is found in the three main duties of a priest, three duties that all believers can participate in – service, teaching, and prayer:

  • Service - Believers are not to come to church and just sit, but actively participate in church services, and assist the church in other internal activities and especially serving the nearby community outside the church. Everyone has gifts, talents, and abilities that are God-given. The key is to discover what they are, and use them for God’s glory.

  • Teaching - Believers are responsible for teaching others about Jesus. Different people will use different styles of teaching. Some will use their in-depth knowledge of God’s Word. Some will use their personal experiences. Many will live quiet, godly lives that demonstrate an understanding of something eternal – something bigger and greater than themselves. But all believers are called to witness to others about who God is, why He is great, and why a life serving and following Him is the only life worth living.

  • Prayer - Believers are to pray to God for guidance. Whether it is praying using Scripture or praying by having a frank, honest conversation with God like you would with a close friend, all believers are called to pray. All believers are also called to intercede on behalf of others. Even though the gift of intercession is a particular spiritual gift that is given to some, the obligation to pray for others (i.e. intercede) is a calling for all believers.

Service, teaching, and prayer – these are the cornerstone activities of a priest. Participating in these activities will be the way that we demonstrate the Father’s love, both to those who know Him, and those who don’t, but desperately need Him.
