Now That is Living
For through Me, your days will be many and years will be added to your life. – Proverbs 9:11
This is all me. I will follow you, Jesus, and I will live a long and happy life. Well actually, that is not what this verse is saying. This was really revealed to me recently when we got the news that a friend had been told they had cancer. I ask why this would happen to someone who to me is a picture of God, someone who gives so much of themselves to others, shouldn’t they get the chance to live forever?
Now this is what this verse is saying. "For through me"- being the hands and feet of Jesus while on this earth, giving all you can back, as it is not yours anyway. "Years will be added to your life"- this to me is the promise of heaven, getting to sit beside Jesus for an eternity and watch the many years we had on earth play out in the lives we got to touch while here. Now that is living. That is what I want. Purposefully living my life for the good of others is what this short journey we call life should be about. Living the days we have been given to touch as many lives as we can. That is what I learned from my friend. We do not know what our "many days" adds up to so live each day like it is our last (heard that before?). Be the hands and feet of Jesus every day and give all we can, resting in the fact that our greatest reward will be many years standing beside God.
