Awkward First Steps…
As Terence "T-Bone" Allen and I made our first steps out of the CCC cul-de-sac this Sunday during the Prayer Walk, we prayed. We prayed that God would bring a natural cadence to our awkward steps…that He would quiet the chattering to bring focus to our hearts and minds…and that Sunday’s walk would transcend the day’s event and change our everyday prayers. Check, check, and check…praise God!
God put some things together for me during the Prayer Walk – He reminded me that I move too fast from point A to point B to point C…rushing from A only thinking of B, until I’m up and off to and thinking only of C; and therefore, everybody and everything in between A and B are just a blur in my windshield. That’s been the case for the past 10 years as I’ve driven passed all the homes and businesses and cement and people between my house and CCC. I may as well have been airlifted back and forth. I was UNaffected and UNinterested…and therefore, UNusable…and I certainly wasn’t salt or light to those people or places. How could I be? I was only passing through physically.
The Prayer Walk changed all of that. By walking and praying through the streets of Smyrna I was given the chance to see my "home" in a much more textured light. What was once a grey blur outside my window has now been slowed down…bringing into focus the people, families, businesses, and schools that are right outside my door. Intentionally approaching my day this way allows me to pray meaningful prayers as I go about my day…not just limiting my prayers to my "official prayer times." That’s huge…that’s transcending the Prayer Walk event. That has caused me to pause and actually consider the charge to "pray continually"…hmmmm?
Thanks Rob and Chris and the entire LOT Team for leading this charge!
What was your Prayer Walk experience? What did you learn about prayer or how you approach it?

Wow, how true. Gives a whole new meaning to “Take time to smell the roses”. Guess in this case the roses are the people.
Love that Central truth – Praying continually requires you to slow down. Never realized that before. Thanks for sharing Doug
Thank you Doug for writing this. Joe and I totally agree! One thing that I was convicted with is that I need to be praying with Owen throughout our day, like we did on the walk. On Sunday we prayed for the cars that would drive by, and of course the train tracks and the train that drives on the tracks to be safe! We also prayed for people who lived in the houses we passed. What a great experience to share with my little boy. We now are walking our neighborhood and doing the same thing and praying at stop lights etc. He loves praying for “Syrrrr-ma”!
What a great day it was!
Ditto. It was a great day and I too prayed for the cars going by, the train, the houses. This week I have change my shopping a bit, so to support Smyrna businesses. It’s a small change but I if I treat Smyrna like a mission trip abroad with the same passion, prayer, and excitement, perhaps I might “see” great works of God.
