The Fruit of the Spirit is not a Coconut
I have a history of lacking self-control. It dates back into childhood and continues to this day when I let my prayer guard down. I was the one that did what everyone else just suggested. Jump off the bridge at the canal, steal my sister’s car when I was 15, graffiti the track at high school…for some reason, God forgot to give me the “hey, that might not be such a great idea” gene and so my filter for things I should say “no” to has very BIG holes. Bad ideas slip right through and into action. Unfortunately, I think I have passed this formidable trait on to my boy. The one who looks like me. So, most evenings, as we lay down for the night, we pray together for fruit of the Spirit. Knowing full well that the fruit of the Spirit is not a coconut, we pray for a spirit of self control. We pray for the Spirit of God to help us with our decisions, that we are wise, and that our actions make God happy. And as daunting as it seems, I will have to pray that prayer forever and so will the blonde one. I have gone into situations as a believing adult, unprepared, not having prayed for self-control and have lost, suffered, and paid for it. I have gone into the same situations having been prayed for and prayed up on my own with drastically different results. So there it is, my forever prayer. The one I need to end with every night and start with every morning. Do you have one of those? A prayer that is always on the tip of your tongue because you need it so often? I guess if you don’t, might I be so bold as to suggest that you start by praying the fruits of the Spirit? It is a great way to begin and end your day.
Just in case you need some inspiration, I attached a favorite song!

I started singing that song as soon as I saw your title! We used to sing it all the time when I was in youth. Thanks for the message.
