Lessons From A Child

I have a young friend named Meredith whom I adore. She is a precious, soon to be four year old. We have a unique connection. This may or may not be true but indulge me for a few minutes. There are times when she is truly excited to see me. She runs up to me with a greeting only a child can give. And that small gesture can make the day so much brighter. There are times when she will sit with me and just “hang out”; making me smile with her silly antics or telling me about what she has done that day. Then there are times she will run right past me without even a glance. She is intent on playing with her friends. There are also times when she is just not in the mood to put up with an old guy. But you know what? She is no less precious when she ignores me than when her face breaks into a smile.

In my simple mind, I see a lot of similarities in my relationship with God and my relationship with my little friend. I find myself walking right past God on my way to other things way too often. There are times when I’m just not in the mood for a quiet time. But there are also times when I cannot get enough of being in His presence. And either way, He receives me with open arms. It’s nice to be assured that no matter how far I may FEEL from God, He hasn’t increased the distance. It just takes me turning back to Him.
