I’m a Minister?

Question: Are you a minister?

Typical Answer: No ~ Alan Scott is our minister or pastor. I’m “just” a Christian.

Here’s the deal:

God gave the church her spiritual leaders, such as Alan, for the purpose of promoting spiritual growth within the body of Christ (a.k.a. the church). The task of church leaders is to train and equip, undergird, prepare, and motivate Christians to do their work. We, as Christians who meet together at Cumberland, should be maturing and growing so that we can in turn build up other Christians.

Of course, pastors are also engaged in the work of the ministry. But, they don’t do it all by themselves. They equip each Christian to work in accordance with their individual spiritual giftedness.

The Bible tells us that every Christian is a baby when they are saved (“new birth” 1 Peter 1:23). God is our Heavenly Father, and just like earthly parents, He loves to see His children growing up! Part of becoming a mature adult is learning to accept our personal responsibility.

Think of it this way: Through our childhood and formative years, we come to find out what we’re good at and passionate about. We go out of our way to acquire specific education in that area, and then ideally, we find a vocation or career in that field.

Spiritual maturity is not really any different. Discover what you’re good at and passionate about. Ask yourself, “What are my spiritual gifts?” Then dig in and find a place where your gifts can be of most benefit to the body of Christ.

So tell me, are you a minister? You absolutely can be! Every Christian is “in the ministry” in the sense that each of us has our own individually unique ministry to present to the Lord. God made you for a purpose. What’s your ministry?
