If a King can do it…

One of the first things that strikes me when I read this passage is how humble David and the leaders of Israel are at this time. It is very easy to see why David was called “a man after God’s own heart”. Another thing I think is I’m really bad about making bullet points when I read. There are four points that I felt this Scripture was really pointing out to me when I first read the verses:

I. To humble ourselves and remember where all authority comes from
II. To give selflessly to the work of God and trust Him to provide
III. Leaders lead by example
IV. Remember to give thanks to God for everything

David’s prayer is the perfect example of humbling oneself before God and submitting to His authority with a willing heart. Even though David did not get his wish, which was to build the temple of the Lord, he still helped his son Solomon accumulate everything he needed to build the temple, and gave thanks to the Lord. David also leads the people of Israel, the leaders especially, to give whatever they could to the temple project, and it says in I Chronicles 29:9 “The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the LORD. David the king also rejoiced greatly.”

As David encouraged the leaders of his kingdom to honor and serve God, and give whatever they could to His service, so should the people of the Christian Faith encourage their leaders to do the same. The leaders of our church provide examples of how we can give God authority in our lives, and live selflessly and we have been blessed where the leaders strive to do just that. And this is where the last point comes in about always remembering to give thanks to God for everything that He does for us, even if it is not what we wanted. If a king can humble himself to be a servant of God, so can I. And I pray that God shows us how to let Him be first in our lives through the examples of great men and women in His word.
