NOT YET! I tell you my key truth at the end

First a story. When I was in the second grade (yes, my memory is still functional at my age) Sister Larentina told us a story about a man who worked in a factory. All of the men in the factory used a great deal of profanity, but not this man. One day the man passed away and at his funeral, several of his co-workers spoke of their experiences with the man. They all regretted they never told the deceased man how much they admired him for never using profanity. Even though the deceased was numbered with them, he was not of them. I am sure the men did more than just use profanity, but for second graders, that was enough.

So what about the verses you ask? I think all would agree the verses are prophetic, but does Jesus want us to all get swords and fight? NOT! I think the swords are symbolic. In fulfilling Isaiah 53:12 “he was numbered with the transgressors”; Jesus was numbered with the transgressor by being crucified between two thieves. In Jewish law, you cannot be a transgressor unless accused by at least two people. Obviously two swords would not be enough to prepare all apostles for armed conflict. It was sufficient for Jesus to be numbered between two sword carrying, armed transgressors to fulfill the prophecy.

For me, to this day, I do not use profanity. Not, because I think the words are inherently evil, but because the words may offend others. MOREOVER, because Sister Larentina told me not to.
