Why is he in charge of me?
When I first read this passage, all I could think of was how hard it is to respect authority. Authority comes in different forms. Most people think government and politians when they think of authority. But what about bosses, teachers, and parents? I know as a teenager still living with my parents it is so hard to follow their rules. Breaking them would be and is so much easier. When you think about it, wouldn’t it be more fun to do things your way? Oh but wait, there are those nasty little things called consequences aren’t there?
God governs all of us but He also places authority figures over us to make sure we follow rules. If you go out and steal a television from Target, you will get caught. The police will arrest you and then you will go before a judge who will determine your judgement. God does the same thing. The Bible also says that if you ignore the authority that He has put above you, then it is like ignoring God. Sometimes it is so hard to follow people you don’t like. When you are at work, you may have a boss who is a jerk, but you can’t just ignore that authority because it might cost you your job. If you wouldn’t ignore someone who holds your job in their hands, why would you ignore someone who is holding your life?
Sometimes it is really hard to accept who has been put into authority above you. It can be even harder to accept it when you know you can’t change who has been put above you. However, when you consider that God has put them there for a reason, just like He has put you where you are for a reason, it makes it a bit easier to swallow. I guess to sum it all up, God has a plan and a reason for whom He puts into authority and no matter what we should always respect that.

Wow you are leaving us. I will miss you. Have fun this year. Find a good church and make new friends. Keep in touch.
Authority is a tough one to obey. It is hard even as an adult to listen to those in authority over you. The one point about obeying authority that you left out was God’s ultamate authority demands you not go against his word. Say your boss at Target told you to steal that TV or price it for one dollar. You know it is wrong but the boss is the authority do you follow his directive? No he is going against God’s word. Yes follow authority but evaluate all things and compare it to what you know about God and his word.
Brynn, I love your practical application to these verses. You’ve got a good head on your shoulders. College will be a great experience for you….however, there will also be a lot of temptation….So! Hold onto your own advice; God is your ultimate authority today and forever!! We’ll miss you…make sure you visit during weekends and Holidays….and most of all that you rock out with us again next Summer….
Brynn, thanks for sharing with us today.

Some people look at verses about laws & authority negatively because they find them to be restrictive, like someone’s trying to hold them back. When, in fact, it’s really just the opposite. When we obey the authorities in our lives we are presented with freedom and a clearer conscience. I feel that sometimes we lose site of the fact that all the authorities in our lives have each been placed here by God. Respecting and obeying these authorities is also respecting and obeying him. This chapter in Romans also goes on to say that the best way to avoid living life in fear of judgement is just to simply obey. No teenager enjoys the feeling that they get when walking around with the knowledge that they’ve done something wrong while desperately hoping that their parents don’t discover what they’ve said or done. We as a people are given a simple solution as to how to avoid this unneeded fear of judgement. We are instructed, to simply “submit ourselves to the governing authorities.” Obeying those figures in your life gains you trust and honors not only your authority figure, but also God.
Brynn, when I think about the wisdom you’ve shown in what you’ve written it just makes me so happy that you’ve embraced eternal wisdom. I pray he keeps you in his care all the days of your life.
As far as the authority thing is concerned, it’s nice to see you got the concept. Also nice to see you’re AWARE it’s not EASY to follow. Pray for the Lord’s guidance and leading and He will see you through.
I love and miss you.
