Why is he in charge of me?

When I first read this passage, all I could think of was how hard it is to respect authority. Authority comes in different forms. Most people think government and politians when they think of authority. But what about bosses, teachers, and parents? I know as a teenager still living with my parents it is so hard to follow their rules. Breaking them would be and is so much easier. When you think about it, wouldn’t it be more fun to do things your way? Oh but wait, there are those nasty little things called consequences aren’t there?

God governs all of us but He also places authority figures over us to make sure we follow rules. If you go out and steal a television from Target, you will get caught. The police will arrest you and then you will go before a judge who will determine your judgement. God does the same thing. The Bible also says that if you ignore the authority that He has put above you, then it is like ignoring God. Sometimes it is so hard to follow people you don’t like. When you are at work, you may have a boss who is a jerk, but you can’t just ignore that authority because it might cost you your job. If you wouldn’t ignore someone who holds your job in their hands, why would you ignore someone who is holding your life?

Sometimes it is really hard to accept who has been put into authority above you. It can be even harder to accept it when you know you can’t change who has been put above you. However, when you consider that God has put them there for a reason, just like He has put you where you are for a reason, it makes it a bit easier to swallow. I guess to sum it all up, God has a plan and a reason for whom He puts into authority and no matter what we should always respect that.
