How do I look? (feed my ego please)
Okay, so one evening, my husband and I are preparing to go out and spend some time together, and I’m in the mirror for like an hour and a half trying to get my hair and makeup flawless along with my outfit. After I’m all done, I come out and ask, “How do I look?” Now, I could’ve actually answered for myself and said, “You look incredible!” Because the entire time following my question, I’m thinking to myself, “You better not say anything otherwise!” Right? How many times have you asked a question with the answer already set in your mind and will argue with anyone that doesn’t say what you want to hear? Or ask, “But what about…….?”
Here, we’re picking up the tail end of a conversation where after Jesus drove out corrupt merchants from the temple courts, the religious leaders wanted to know what right He thinks He has to do these kind of things. So instead of stooping to their level and zapping them with His omnipotence, He in turn asks them a question; not only to explain who He is, but to expose their hypocrisy as well-if John was from God, then he was right in proclaiming Jesus as the Messiah – and if this is true, then Jesus had all authority. But, if John was from men, what a riot that would start because all of the people were persuaded that John was a prophet. Sooo, how did they answer? – “I don’t know”; showing that they were not really looking for the truth-they cared more about winning an argument in front of everyone. And to that Jesus replied basically saying, “If you do not recognize authority when you see it, no amount of arguing will convince you of it.”
If we truly want answers from Jesus, we must deal rightly with the truth that has already been revealed to us. These men knew that John said Jesus was the Messiah, and just weren’t willing to accept it.

I haven’t thought about using questions to avoid the truth. But, we do it as children “Do I have to?” “What about him he isn’t helping?”. I have done it as an adult. I have encountered it with those I share Christ with. “How can a loving God…?” “What about those who die before they hear?” In truth they are just avoiding God’s truth. I am so thankful God loves me enough to give me His word which is truth.
