Caution Falling Rock

So have you ever driven through the mountains and seen the signs that say “caution falling rock”.  The sign guy always seems to leave a couple of good size rocks just to make their point.  This verse got me to thinking what is worse: running into a rock or having one fall on you?  You might have some serous injuries if you run into one, but you will live.  Now if one falls on top of you (unless you are Wily Coyote chasing the Road Runner) well lets just say there will not be an open casket.

Just a couple days before this, Jesus came riding in on a donkey… you know Palm Sunday.  And the previous day he has turned over the tables in the temple.   Let us just say the Jewish Religious were not happy campers and were now trying to find anyway and anything they could to trip him up.  The Jewish people believed that Jesus is going to be their King and are still captivated.  In the verse right before this Jesus once again shows that He is the Messiah by pointing to an Old Testament verse in Psalms.  Verse 18 is also a paraphrased version of a verse from Isaiah 8:14.  The religious leaders knew that if they tried to take Jesus right then they would be mobbed.

I think they knew this story applied to them because they were trying to trip Jesus up.  Not just trying to understand God’s will.  They have intentionally put their own needs for glory and money to come before God’s will.
