Plant Food For Humans

I love to write. I enjoy putting words to paper, bit by bit, and creating something that reads well and makes a point. I wish I could say that whatever writing talent I have came naturally and easily, and that all I have to do to is want to write, then I sit down, and the right words and phrases flow easily and effortlessly from my typing. The reality is that writing is a struggle – I write, rewrite, save, discard, and spend lots of time staring at my monitor, staring into space, and wishing that I could take a chainsaw to my writer’s block. Writing is a process and a discipline. It doesn’t happen without being willing to engage in the hard work and repetitive nature of write, rewrite, edit, proof, and polish.

Just like the writing process, life is tough from the time you’re given responsibility without a backup plan. Deadlines, commitments, and maintaining healthy relationships all take more time and energy that we ever thought they would in our youth, when we thought that all we had to do is desire something and it would happen. Everything we accomplish through human means requires toil and effort. And that toil and effort by itself is never enough.

But God in His Greatness never leaves us without resources, and through everything we have to go through, He has given us two things that help us to survive our busy, crazy lives. One is the ability to have faith. Exercising faith is our way of acknowledging that there is more to life than us. We don’t get as discouraged when we remember that it’s not about us, but it’s about God and other people. Partnering with faith to help keep us sane is the capacity to love. Love allows us to give others what they need without expecting anything in return. And sometimes, we even get love in return.

Jesus is the reason that we can draw on faith, and working from a foundation of love, we can experience the love of God in all its fullness.
