Never Be Quiet

Far be it for us to question in all God’s creation that it would be possible that stones might actually “cry out” but I don’t think that Jesus was speaking literally although there are several places in scripture that speak of inanimate nature praising God; Habakuk 2:11, Psalms 96:11, 98:7-9, and also John the Baptists talks of it in Mathew 3:9. However imagine the scene, Jesus is entering Jerusalem where thousands of Jews, having come to the city for Passover, are eagerly waiting to whiteness this man that so many have spoken of , this is Christ’s triumphant entrance after 3 years of miracles, controversy, and an ever growing following. There is electricity in the air, the crowd is pumped, excited and jubilant and for some who believe that this is the Messiah this marks the moment in history predicted by the prophets, and taught to them their whole lives; what’s going to happen, what will He do, people scrambling to see, just to get a glimpse of Christ… and in the middle of this with a crowd shouting and screaming His name some of the Pharisees come up to Christ and tell Him to ‘rebuke’ His disciples, to tell them to be quiet. I’d like to think that Jesus was maybe enjoying a little sarcasm at the expense of the Pharisees and why not. I always try to place moments like this into modern day life to help put them in better perspective, when would a statement, like that asked of Jesus, apply today. Well most of us, I imagine, have at some time been to a rock concert, stood at your seat anxiously waiting for one of the world’s most popular bands to strike up, there’s anticipation, a rising hum across maybe 100,000 people and then amidst the smoky stage a cord is struck and thousands of fans break into cheer knowing what’s coming next….now imagine someone going up to the lead guitarist and amidst the roar of the crowd telling him to quiet the fans and him saying “Dude if they keep quiet the walls of this stadium will cry out…”

If we learn anything from this scripture it is that we should never be quiet about Christ and no matter how the world tries to restrict the word of God or even our relationship with Christ the truth is that nothing in this world, not even Satan, can prevent the inevitable when Christ once again triumphantly returns.
