Fashionably Late
Have you ever been fashionably late to an event? In this passage, the rich man was indeed fashionable with his fine regalia and fancy lifestyle. However, he was also late on the HUGE decision of WHOM to serve. We know God says we cannot serve both God and money. Who did the rich man serve while on Earth? Who did Lazarus? Only AFTER death did the rich man cry out for Mercy. Only AFTER death he pleaded for water for his tongue. How often do we ignore God’s word and then cry out to Him when we find ourselves in trouble? During this difficult economic time, we see others content, secure, peaceful and we wonder, “Lord, why am I in agony? Why am I suffering?” My take away from this verse is not to wait until it is too late but to decide now how to live, living life knowing heaven is real and God is in control. God never promises it will always be easy as Christians, but He does promise He will never leave you.
In getting ready for our first baby girl to come, we have been doing some preparation. We’ve read books, taken parenting classes and gone to doctors appointments. We’ve been preparing the nursery, registering at retail stores and planning baby showers. I’ve also been trying to exercise, eat right, and avoid all the high fructose corn syrup out there. ? We’re equipping ourselves even though we don’t know EXACTLY what is in store for us. We do know fundamental truths that will happen once the baby arrives (crying, eating, sleeping, cooing, playing). We won’t ignore the signs and advice just because we don’t SEE the baby yet. We know the day is coming where our lives will change for good.
Similarly, our last day here on Earth will end and we will open our eyes to a new life. As Christians, we will not sit back and ignore the Bible’s instructions and then beg for mercy when it’s too late, as the rich man does in this scripture. We prepare and wait.
While I’m Waiting, by John Waller

Cheryl this is a great verse for you waiting/expecting. You asked How are you waiting? I hope the answer is expectantly, hopfully, patiently, and longing for Christ’s return. In reality I forget about Christ’s return and let the routine of daily life take over. Not looking forward but getting through the day. Today I will wait worship and wonder at what Christ has done. PS I have been waiting for your daughter too. Congrats agsin. You and Rob will be great parents.
Thanks Cheryl…for your well-written and challenging thoughts. Waiting…hmmm, something culturally we try to find a “solution” for at any expense…something we get less and less able to do at all…much less with any amount of grace-filled patience. Forget the obedience or confidence…waiting is something to be avoided or fixed. So as Christians, particularly in waiting on God, we must be counter-cultural…and do as Penny suggested – wait with hope and expectation of God’s guidance and provision and Christ’s return. Thanks again Cheryl.
Cheryl,
Congratulations on your baby!
Thank you for sharing this today, a much needed reminder for me. I too, easliy get caught up in the day to day stuff and forget the reason I am here….to serve Him, worship Him, share Him with others…..while I’m waiting.
Thanks for the beautiful song too. Love the lyrics.
Cheryl,
thank you so much for sharing and for challenging us. I absolutely love that song that you linked, how perfect! Good luck with you baby!
