You Cannot Erase Sharpie
A couple of weekends ago, my daughter’s bff spent the night. They decided to do some coloring using markers and paper. Somehow, a RED Sharpie got mixed in with the box of WASHABLE Crayolas! Needless to say not all of the marks made it onto the paper and now my dining room table has PERMANENT red sharpie marks on it.
When I read this scripture, that was one of the first things that came to mind. God’s Word is like a permanent marker. As we get to know Christ and start to get deeper in our relationship, things in our lives that are not up to Christ’s standard of living should be erased. That’s where I find myself occassionally, well often, asking, “Well, does the Bible REALLY say DON’T do that?” I feel that maybe as we get closer to Christ, the question should be: Is this pleasing to Him, rather than is this okay to do. God’s Word is the standard for living – even if you don’t have it memorized, the Holy Spirit is there to give you a little (hopefully just a little) nudge when there is something off. It is definitely a lot easier to change things around in the Scripture to fit your lifestyle instead of changing your lifestyle to fit that of Christ’s. However, everything that we know of would have to cease to exist, so it’s actually A LOT better to just allow Christ to do the transformations in your heart and in your life. So as I continue to scrub the dining room table, hoping that somehow, this time the marker will magically wipe off, I just think, okay God, thank You for Your mercy during the times I’ve resisted transformation and for your grace that allows me to have another chance.

Ruth, I too have had my bouts with the Sharpie. I like idea that the only thing that is like a Sharpie is God’s Word. His word is not something we want to erase. But the blemishes in my life, that I think will never go away, are easily wiped clean. God’s Grace is a million times better than the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. And that is saying a lot.
Ruth, thank you.
God doesn’t use permanent ink to write down our sins! Thanks to Jesus, all gone.
I am so greatful God doesn’t use a sharpie to keep track of my sins. I was thinking that he uses the washable markers. Jesus’s blood can then wash away my sins if I confess them and turn wasy from them and back to God.
I agree that we like to change God’s word to justify our lifes rather than look at God’s unchanging word and change our lives.
Keep dry and safe today
Ruth,
I can relate to your Red Sharpie story.
I find that sometimes God’s Word, though permanent, is not always what I want to deal with. In my fleshy moments, I just wish it would go away and quit staring at me. To my benefit, it never goes away. But I have the choice to look at it – or look away. Looking away may be easy but it’s definitely NOT the right choice.
Ruth,
Very insightful. I’m so glad God uses “Washable Markers”!!!
Ruth… you are the real deal.
Thanks for WHO you are.
Blessings…
Amazing how comforting an image like a dining table with red sharpie marks left by little fingers is….to remind us in our weaker moments, that His Word in our hearts is the ultimate indelible!! That His blood shed before the foundation of the world is the ultimate indelible!! And that His seal on our hearts and souls is the ultimate indelible! And yet those sharpie marks CAN sometimes be removed…with enough elbow grease, and detergent…but His cannot!!! Paul thanked our Lord for his “marks”. So should I. Thanks for the image…a picture is worth a thousand words. Blessings…hope to meet you one day!
